GIGO - Garbage In Garbage Out
“For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart” (Matthew 12:34b).
“GIGO.” “Garbage in, garbage out” is a phrase that comes to us from the computer world, meaning “pour quality of input leads to erroneous and defective output.”
An obvious parallel to the world of running is nutrition. A fine-tuned running performance relates directly to what you eat; how much you eat, and when you eat it. I’m no expert at it, but it appears that high carb intake prior to a race is important, along with plenty of fluids, and protein after the race to rebuild muscle tissue.
Jesus spoke of behavior performance also, and His observation was “the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart.” The verbiage we spew is an indicator of our heart’s condition, and the quality of our spiritual nutrition. A vile, abusive mouth indicates the presence of spiritual “coronary” disease with symptoms like sin, selfishness, and hatred—the very behaviors Jesus died to save us from!
The book of James further clarifies, “But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things out not to be this way” (James 3:8-10).
Jesus is the consummate heart doctor, the Healer of souls. Changing the nature of what we speak requires heart transformation. Receiving the fruit of the Holy Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, Galatians 5:22-23) in one’s heart is the beginning of godly and upbuilding words coming out of our mouths. In other words, blessing others!
Garbage in, garbage out. Junk food in shows up on the finish time and the clock. Godliness in, godliness out. Systematic Bible intake results in purified language.
Proper nutrition for active runners involves what you intake, how much, and when you intake it. And, likewise for your spiritual performance – what you intake, how much, and when you intake it.
So what does your language and life indicate about the quality of your spiritual diet?
